Have
No Fear...Saban Is Here!
By Casey Matthews
FantasticFins.com
One of the worst years in the history of the Fins left us all shaking
our heads, and wondering what’s next. Well… we have
our answer. Some will say that we should have hired someone different
for the job, or gone about the hiring process differently…
I ask WHY? Why be the team that passes on the hottest coach in college
football? The man that our highly respected enemy Belichick calls
a “genius”, and says that he (Belichick) has learned
more from Saban, than Saban has from him. Mr. H wanted a man who
wants to dominate, and be a champion, and he went out and got him.
We now have a coach who knows what he wants to get accomplished.
He doesn’t wait for the cards to be dealt to him; he goes
out and takes the cards he wants out of the dealers’ hand.
If you were shocked to hear our coach talk about dominating, and
being a champion instead of hearing about putting our players in
the best position to win… get used to it. In Saban’s
book “How Good Do You Want to Be?” he talks about not
focusing on getting there (championship) but what it takes to get
there. He talks about responding to adversity, and having personal
responsibility for the results you show on the field. But to me
the most encouraging part of the book is one quote that shows me
how Saban thinks, and what we can expect out of our team….
“Promise a starting time, but not a quitting time: It’s
not the time you put in that’s important; it’s how you
spend the time. By not setting a quitting time, you are really saying
that practice never ends and hard work does not have a conclusion.”
That quote blew me away. If you have attended training camp in the
past 4 years or so, you have probably noticed the same thing I have.
It doesn’t seem like the players are working as hard as they
should. It seemed to me that Dave didn’t hold his players
accountable for how they practiced. I saw at time Zach Thomas and
Junior Seau taking a knee for 15-20 min at a time. I saw and heard
different players talking about what they were doing after practice,
and the vacation they were going on in a few days. Saban will not
have that crap. He will make our players work for playing time,
and show them that results will come with hard work. Here are some
words you can expect to hear from Saban… resiliency, overcoming
adversity, competitive spirit, dedication to the little things,
and not letting up. The man is ready to take our team to the level
we need to be at. He will put together a staff that wants to win,
and a team that wants to work hard, we will NEVER be able to question
his desire or dedication to our team.
Now for our part as fans…. We are coming out of years of
mediocrity and laziness. We have had a coach that had NO clue what
he was doing, and had NO business coaching a football team. We as
fans knew this, and responded to the results of this “regime”
by booing him, and some going as far as making websites such as
Firedavewannstedt.com and others. I totally support and agree with
all the negative feelings that people have toward Dave and what
he did to our team. But we are in a new era. An era of coaches who
know how to coach, and know how to get players to play hard. We
have a coach who not only LOVES to win, but NEEDS to win. That need
drives him as hard as anyone else to be the best he can be. So I
call on all Dolfans to get behind him and this new “regime”.
Support him and question his moves with positive curiosity, and
not negativity. I’m asking ALL Dolfans to join me in a celebration
of a new era in Dolphins history, an era where we LOVE our coach,
and support him in ALL he does. Even if we don’t understand
it, or necessarily agree with it, for we have no reason to doubt
him or disagree with what he does. On the flip-side of that coin,
we have no reason to agree with everything he does either. But let’s
give him the benefit of the doubt, at least for a little while.
There is really no timetable for it, but until you feel that our
team would be better off without him, let’s be his biggest
fans. I am excited about the years that are to come under Coach
Saban, and I will support and defend him in all he does until I
feel, like I said before, that our team would be better off without
him. I hope you all will join me.
