Hurricane Ricky
By Casey Matthews

What a year. Oh wait, its only week 4. So we are 0-3, lost another RB, signed another RB, switched QB’s twice, lost our inspired Defensive Tackle. Placed our #1 draft pick on the inactive list. Played two of our games, at a different time than scheduled. Can it get worse??? That still remains to be seen, but what is for sure is that we are in a real bind right now. I see this point in the season as a cross-road. We can either try and play for a Wild Card spot, which is obviously a stretch. Or we can play for next year.

There are obvious pro’s and con’s with both. To me we need to look no further than the QB situation to see what is on Dave’s mind. He obviously is feeling the heat, and doing what he feels he needs to do, to save his job. But is that really best for the team? I don’t think it is. What does starting Jay give us, a shot to win 6 or 7 games while leaving our newly aquired QB on the sidelines, missing out on the experience that he needs, in order to improve, and possibly giving us a worse draft pick next year. Sure Jay gives us a better chance to win. But does that really matter anymore? That is why I say we are at a cross-road. If we move forward with Jay, then we have to make the playoffs for it to be a good decision. As much of an optimist as I am, I just don’t see us making the playoffs. I know AJ has stunk it up, but can you blame him? He has no offensive line, no running game, and no confidence. In my opinion, he throws a nice ball, but just doesn’t have the decision making skills that you need to be a successful QB in this league. So what is the cure for that…. Game time experience. A chance to take the lumps, and bumps. Knowing that on the other side of that will be a more mature QB, a gelled offensive line, and a chance to do great things next year. I know it sucks to be talking about next year in week 4 of the season, but unfortunately it’s a reality. A reality that Dave is trying to ignore. I would not be surprised if we go 0-5 to start the season. If that is the case, than there is nobody that can deny that we will miss the playoffs. Not even Dave can deny that. I just pray that if that nightmare becomes reality, that Dave will have the guts to say, AJ get in there, and take your bumps and bruises. Knowing that he will be, and the team will be, better because of it. Our coaches character is about to undergo a gut wrenching test. I just hope that he doesn’t hurt our future by trying to save his. There is no doubt that Dave is a great guy, and a class act. But he lacks the skills necessary to coach an NFL team.

The other side of this fascinating dilemma is the future prospects that might be joining this team. If we go 3-13 or even worse, will Edge want to join us next year? Will a coach want to try and sort out this mess? I will be here through all of it, and support every decision made, no matter how much I don’t like it. I just have this feeling that right now we are experiencing the outer bands of the hurricane. And that the eye of hurricane Ricky is quickly approaching.
