Did
You See What I Saw?
By Casey Matthews
FantasticFins.com
Well, the first half of the season is almost over. I for one didn’t
think we be looking at the possibility of finishing the first half
at 1-7. But as of about 2 weeks ago, I didn’t know that we
would even have that 1 win. With the poor play of our O-line, and
the ridiculous decisions made by our QB, I think every fan can see
why I held that opinion.
There are however some bright spots after watching last weeks game.
I haven’t enjoyed watching a game that much in quite some
time. It was like we were a totally different team. From the coaching
staff, down through the players the team as a whole had a different
“buzz” around it, than I had become used to. With trick
plays, and a “go for broke” attitude, it was just so
much fun to watch. I felt that we finally doing what needed to do,
and that is letting our players make plays. Not trying to be perfect,
just letting our players do what they love to do. Have fun, and
play football. I have seen us play the field position, ball control
game to many times, and it was definitely refreshing to see something
different.
Here’s some of the key stats that led to the victory, in
my opinion of course.
First were the penalties, or lack of. We committed only 4 penalties
in the sum of 37 yards. Compared to our average of 7 a game for
51 yards, I’d say we improved. The next big thing was our
Red Zone efficiency. We scored touchdowns both times we were in
the red zone. That was a huge factor in the win. In previous games
our Red Zone efficiency was horrible. In the 7 point loss to Buffalo
we were 0-1 in the Red Zone. In the loss to New England we were
a horrendous 1-5. We lost by 14 points, even a 3-5 in the red zone
would have put us in OT. I think you get the theme, if we don’t
score when we get in the Red Zone, we WONT win. But the biggest
factor in my opinion was our 3rd down conversion percentage. We
were 7-13 on 3rd downs. What that did for us, was kept the Rams
defense on the field, and kept our defense off the field. It forced
them to take chances in the game, which led to mistakes and points
for us. That conversion rate was the best we have had all season.
The closest we have come to that all year was 5-12. If we go back
to that kind of play, we will not win another game. But you have
to look at WHY we were that bad on 3rd downs. The reason is the
yardage we had to get to convert. Our yards to go on 3rd down was
considerably less on Sunday than it had been in the previous weeks.
Obviously not committing turnovers was another huge thing this week.
We won the turnover battle, and really kept the confidence of our
offense up. The other factors, that contributed were our play on
special teams, and our rushing yardage. We completely dominated
that game, and it was a lot of fun to watch.
I hate to mention this, but there are some things we still need
to work on. We gave up 6 sacks last week, and the Rams only had
10 sacks for the whole year coming into our game. That’s pitiful.
But at the same time, I felt that overall our O-line looked better
than they had. They really looked like they are beginning to gel.
One side note on the sacks is that Jay didn’t try to do more
than he could and he held on to the ball. No lateral to an O-lineman.
Ha-ha.
Another thing is our average yards per pass. We finished with an
8.6 yards per pass average. That by no means is a bad average, to
put it in perspective, Minnesota averages an 8.7 yards per pass
average on the year. We average about 5.47 on the year. But what
I’m saying is that against St.Louis we had a touchdown pass
of 71 yards, and 44 yards, plus a 48 yard pass by Marty Booker.
Take away those three plays, and our yards per pass average are
3.9. That is definitely an issue that needs to be taken care of.
I’m not trying to take away from our performance, but just
stating the facts.
The most exciting part of the game for me was the hit Tony Bua
laid on Bryce Fisher. I was going crazy after seeing his neck snap
back like that. The fire that kid has is awesome, and obviously
contagious. That hit just totally topped off the energy level of
that team, and was great to ride into this week with. Our confidence
is definitely higher than it was, and a win this Monday would be
great.
The keys to success this Monday night are very simple and clear.
We MUST stop the run and make Pennington take some chances. We can’t
play from behind, we have to score first and keep the Jets from
playing ball control offense. We have to score when we are in the
red zone, even field goals are fine. But we can’t waist our
drives. If we can manage to do those things, we WILL win the game.
Go Phins!!!
