I've
Got My Answer
By Casey Matthews

What a season….
With all the things that have gone on this season, is has become
evident to me that there are very, VERY serious and deep reaching
issues going on in our franchise. The winingest franchise in the
NFL since the merger is coming up on in my opinion one of the most
important off seasons we have ever gone through. And surprisingly
enough in this crazy season we are in, something is happening that
is helping us prepare for it. That something is figuring out whether
or not AJ Feeley is going to be our QB of the future or not. In
my opinion we have our answer, and the answer is NO. Don’t
get me wrong, I’d love him to be the one. His heart and effort
are something we should all admire. But the fact is its results
that matter, not just effort. Because we had a QB for four years
that gave his body and effort for our team, and we all agree he
is not anything near what we quarterbacking our team. AJ Feeley
has certain skills that a QB needs, but he doesn’t have the
most important one of all, the mind. He makes very foolish decisions
and can’t seem to get out of that habit. His INT’s are
not all his fault, but at least 75% of them are the result of a
bad DECISION, not just a bad throw. That’s the key to me.
The ‘Fins are definitely going to have a top 5 pick and maybe
even THE top pick, and not knowing what our QB has, is the worst
thing to go into the off-season facing. So in a way AJ is helping
us out by throwing these INT’s and showing us that he is not
in our long term future of the team. Whoever comes in to resurrect
this franchise has to decide this off-season what kind of team we
will be for years to come. With the offensive weapons we have, we
definitely need to direct our team in that way.
In my opinion there are only three guys that I would be absolutely
thrilled to have as our coach. Those men are Nick Saban, Brad Childress,
and Charlie Weiss. Saban excites me because of his fire for the
game. I don’t know how good of a HC he would be, but I’d
love to find out. Weiss is an obvious choice for the job, but the
only drawback is that he has the genius minds of Pioli, and Belichik,
helping him out, not to mention the incredible defense that the
Patriots have. Childress is the most intriguing choice to me. The
reasons are endless. I love what he has done with the offense in
Philly. And I think our team is so close offensively to almost mirror
the Eagles. If you look at that offense over the past few years,
you will see a central idea: Quick Decisions. If there is nothing
there for Donovan, than he takes off. Its simple and it works. They
don’t have a Priest Holmes, or Shaun Alexander running the
ball, just a guy who fits the system and runs hard. They have a
QB with a strong arm, and the ability to run with the ball. It wasn’t
till this year when that offense really took shape. The addition
of Owens completed the tri-fecta. They now have a WR who demands
a double team. This opens up the ENTIRE field. If the WR’s
are covered well, Donovan can take off. If Donovan is being spied
he can dump it off to the RB. Its simple, but it works. I think
our team is close to being able to do that. We already have the
receivers and I feel that running backs like Lamar Gordon or Sammy
Morris could be perfect in that offense. The QB is what we are missing,
but that QB is probably going to be available to us. His name is
Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers has a great arm, and is scouted as being
very good at making the short passes, and then when the defense
adjusts to it, he will throw the ball downfield for a big gain.
But my favorite thing I’ve read about him is that he is an
excellent leader, and he is only 20 years old!!! This guy could
be a great one, and I pray that we draft him. What further intrigues
me with Brad Childress is that he is in a franchise that is mastering
the salary cap, and still has players like McNabb, Kearse, Owens
and others. I spoke with Pat Kirwan today and he told me two things.
One is that this is the perfect time for Miami to draft a QB. We
are rebuilding and it’s better to rebuild with a rookie QB
than bring in a rookie when the team is sort of already settled.
The other thing he said is that Childress is the perfect man for
the Miami coaching job. He said the key is that he has learned from
the best and knows the salary cap very well. He also said that he
is a key to the Eagles resigning players before they become great,
which helps financially. Miami could definitely use a guy like that.
This off-season will be a fun one. Buckle Up!!
